QUECHEE, Vt. (AP) – A two-alarm fire caused serious damage to the home of state Rep. Michael Kainen on Saturday morning.

Firefighters were called to the Kainen’s two story home just before 9 a.m. for a reported chimney fire, according to Capt. Raymond Bushey of Hartford Emergency Services.

“When we arrived there was heavy smoke showing from one end of the house on the second floor,” he said. “We ventilated that area and immediately heavy fire vented from the windows.”

Firefighters from several communities in Vermont and New Hampshire helped extinguish the fire within 15 minutes.

The post and beam structure suffered extensive fire damage to a bedroom, a bathroom and a chimney casing as well as smoke damage on the entire second floor. The home’s cathedral ceilings were also considered extremely damaged, Bushey said.
