FARMINGTON – The Franklin Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship Committee is again offering the West Central Maine Health Careers Scholarship Program. The scholarships are presented to students in need of financial assistance who live in the hospital’s service area, and are pursuing careers in health care. Applications must be returned by April 15. Applicants must have been accepted to a school of choice by that date. The hospital auxiliary will select six $500 scholarship winners in May; the scholarships will be awarded following the successful completion of the first semester. Health program

FARMINGTON – In conjunction with February’s “Go Red for Women” heart health awareness campaign, registrations are being accepted for the next “Prescriptions for Health” presentation, featuring cardiologist Dr. Francis DeRook. It will take place from noon to 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 7, in the Bass Room at Franklin Memorial Hospital. It is free and open to the public and includes a complimentary lunch. The presentation will describe heart disease, its risk factors, lifestyle changes to reduce risks and surviving a heart attack. Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of American women, claiming the lives of one in three women. DeRook practices diagnostic cardiology with a special emphasis on congestive heart failure and the sub-specialty of cardiac imaging at Central Maine Heart and Vascular Institute, as well as at Franklin Memorial.
