FARMINGTON – On an average day, 25 students take advantage of extra academic help in core subjects after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Mt. Blue High School. Some students are there every day the program is offered.
The number has reached more than 50 students during the two-hour sessions, depending on what students are studying, extended-day coordinator Mady Brod told SAD 9 directors recently.
The program offers extra help in math, English, social studies, science, health and physical education. It began as a six-week program in April 2003 and grew to a full-year program the following school year.
The district made a commitment to provide student transportation, Brod said, which has helped the program become a success.
The aim is to offer a consistent, supportive place to complete homework, study for tests, learn a skill and work on a project.
Students also may use the program to try to replace failed assessments so that they may move toward graduation and receipt of a diploma, she said.
The teaching staff works hard to provide individual instruction and support necessary to ensure student success, Brod said. Students may be referred by any school staff member, their parents or themselves.
More than 50 students decided on their own to participate in the program this year, Brod said.
“The word has gotten out about the program and I think it’s growing by the minute,” she said. “Our goal is to provide students every opportunity to be successful.”
