BOSTON (AP) – Big Dig inspectors announced Friday that they’ve found another small leak in the Interstate 93 tunnel walls.

The leak isn’t as large as the wall breach last September that sent water pouring into the tunnel and created a massive traffic tie-up, according to Keith Sibley, construction director for Bechtel/Parsons Brinckerhoff, managers for the highway project.

The new leak is in a nearby portion of the tunnel and had been previously patched with grout. That didn’t fix the problem and engineers are working on a better solution, Sibley said.

Inspectors also checked more that 50 other locations in the tunnel as part of an expanded inspection to make sure there are no other potential leaks.

That new series of inspections found three potential defects in the walls, none of which were leaking water.

Sibley also said that initial repair work has begun on 17 panels identified earlier in the inspection process. He said the work is being slowed by freezing temperatures.
