FARMINGTON – Mt. Blue High School Principal Greg Potter signed a three-year contract Wednesday to become superintendent of School Union 133 starting July 1.

Potter, of Waterville, was hired in 1999 as assistant principal at the high school and became principal in 2000.

Potter said Wednesday he plans to submit an official resignation to SAD 9 to be effective at the end of his contract June 30.

SAD 9 Superintendent Michael Cormier informed the school board Tuesday night that Potter would be leaving the district.

Union 133 serves nearly 500 students at schools in Windsor, Palermo and Somerville. Students in the system have school choice when it comes to attending a high school.

The kindergarten-through-eighth-grade school system has three school committees, one in each town, and a consolidated union school board.

Potter will replace Union 133 Superintendent Lyford Beverage, who plans to retire June 30.

Beverage, who has been in education for 40 years, said Potter was chosen from 12 applicants for the position.

“The committee was impressed with (Potter’s) energy, his knowledge of current education issues and with his organizational skills,” Beverage said. “And, they feel he’ll be forthright and concise in his communication.”

Potter’s salary is still being negotiated, both Beverage and Potter said.

Potter said he was qualified to become a superintendent in July and was certified in January.

“I’m very excited,” Potter said. “It’s a great opportunity.”

He said he was impressed with members of the school board and the screening committee in the search for a new superintendent.

The school system is closer to his home by 10 minutes and he expects to have more time to spend with his family.

Union 133 is finishing up a major school renovation – an $11 million project at the Windsor school – and plans to move the superintendent’s office from Whitefield to the Windsor school.

“I really enjoyed working with the students, faculty, community and administrative team. Dr. Cormier has been a tremendous mentor me,” Potter said.

“I’m going to miss SAD 9,” he said. “It’s a system that is moving forward and I’m really proud of it.”
