Tom Bragg’s 3-pointer with 0.4 seconds left sent the game into overtime and Hyde outshot Richmond from the free-throw line in the extra session as the Phoenix advanced in the Western D tournament with a 68-60 victory.
Bragg tallied a game-high 33 points for the fourth-seeded Phoenix (10-5), who will face No. 1 Pine Tree Academy in the semifinals Wednesday. Phil Kronberg and Austin Redding added 10 points apiece for Hyde.
Billy Milne led No. 5 Richmond (10-9) with 18 points while Kyle Lancaster poured in 14.
The game was tied at the end of the first and second quarters. Hyde led by as much as eight in the third but just one at the end of the period. The Bobcats took a 58-55 lead on a Tony Boles free throw with 13.7 seconds left. Without calling a timeout, the Phoenix got the ball on the left side of the 3-point arc to Bragg, who drilled the game-tying trey.
Neither team scored a field goal in the overtime. The game turned into a free throw shooting contest, with Hyde shooting 10-for-12, while Richmond made just 2-of-4.
Boys’ Class C
Wiscasset 77, Madison 60
AUGUSTA – Wiscasset scored 10 straight points to start the game and fended off numerous Madison rallies in a 77-60 win in Monday’s Western Maine Class C quarterfinal.
Madison struggled early with missed shots and turnovers, while the Redskins built an early lead the Bulldogs couldn’t overcome.
The seventh-ranked Bulldogs (9-10) battled their way back numerous times, but Wiscasset’s offense answered swiftly and assertively each time.
Second-seed Wiscasset (15-4) advances to Thursday’s semifinal against Boothbay.
Conrad Griffin led the Redskins with 25 points. Ben Stoodley added 15, while Jason Dighton and Curtis DeCosta were also in double digits with 11 and 10 points. The Bulldogs, which lost to Wiscasset 66-49 in the regular season, were led by Ryan Pinkham’s 19 points. Tom Steuber added 13 while Judah Norris had 10.
The 10-0 run to open the game helped Wiscasset build a 19-7 lead in the first quarter, but free throws by Pinkham and a 3-pointer from Bishop helped the Bulldogs close the gap.
Madison closed within six points three times in the second and erased a 12-point deficit in the third with eight unanswered points, six from Norris. That made it 42-38, but DeCosta and Griffin combined for 10 straight points to extend Wiscasset’s lead back to 52-38.
Pinkham’s 3-pointer and a Norris three-point play early in the fourth cut the lead to seven, but the Redskins answered with a free throw from Dighton and a basket by Griffin. Madison never got any closer than eight points the rest of the way.
