RUMFORD – Five Star Quality Papers seems like a good name for the MeadWestvaco mill, 25-year employee Greg Buccina said.

The soon-to-be new owners of the paper division, Cerberus Capital Management, a New York investment firm, asked employees to provide suggestions.

Buccina isn’t sure just how many employees from the five mills in the MeadWestvaco Corp. paper division submitted ideas, but he thought he’d give it a try.

MeadWestvaco spokesman Tony Lyons said Friday that a new name will be announced sometime in March, just before the $2.3 billion deal is closed on the purchase of MeadWestvaco’s five paper division mills. The closing is expected sometime during the second quarter, Lyons said.

“A lot of people took advantage of the toll-free number,” said Lyons. “People were pleased that they were given an opportunity to come up with a new name.”

Lyons said employees could also submit a new logo for the paper division. The current MeadWestvaco signs have no logo.

“This is a fairly major event,” said Lyons of the impending name change. “It’s a new identity and a new focus.”

Buccina said his idea just popped into his head. He had thought of four-star hotels as being high quality, and he thought “five star” would indicate high-quality paper as well as symbolize the five mills that are part of the paper division.

“It’s pretty nice that they asked,” he said.

Buccina is a safety specialist at the mill and a strong supporter of it.

“We want to be a top-quality company. Safety and quality products are the most important at the mill,” he said.

Besides the Rumford mill, the Cerberus deal includes mills in Ohio, Michigan, Maryland and Kentucky.
