LEWISTON – The 1960 Maine Class A Football Championship team from Lewiston High School will be honored on its 45th anniversary by the Auburn-Lewiston Sports Hall of Fame at its award banquet April 24.
While not a preseason pick to be at the top, the Devils upset South Portland 13-12 in the opener and then beat Portland, Deering, Thornton and Edward Little before losing to St. Louis of Biddeford. With other wins over Rumford, Cheverus and again Edward Little, the champs ended their season with an 8-1 record and claimed the state title after South Portland beat St. Louis.
The 1960 team featured All-State selections Rod Durgin, John Tewhey and Bob Dumas. Other outstanding members of the team included Tom Lahey, Roger Caux, John Schott, Dave Kohr, Tim Love and Frank Pelletier. Durgin was the recipient of the Normand Dionne Trophy and was named to the All-America high school football team. Coaches Norm Parent and Dick Gibson, along with Durgin, have been inducted into the A-L Sports Hall of Fame.
Presenting the Flashback to Fame Award to the invited team members is always a special part of the banquet, along with the Chamber President’s Awards to outstanding senior college and high school students, and the permanent installation of the new Hall of Fame inductees, who will be named April 15.
Tickets for the 22nd annual awards and induction banquet at Lost Valley are available at the Chamber of Commerce office at 783-2249.
