AUBURN – Work on the city charter should begin a new chapter as commissioners wrap up their information-gathering work this week.

The Charter Commission has scheduled a second public hearing at 7 p.m. Thursday in Auburn Hall to get opinions and ideas for changing the charter.

After that, commissioners begin the process of rewriting the city’s charter.

“We’ll start going over it, article by article, looking for any changes that might be helpful,” said commission Chairman John Cleveland. “That’s when we really start drafting language and looking at alternatives – the real nuts and bolts of working with the charter.”

The Charter Commission’s first report, outlining any suggested changes, is expected later this summer. A new charter will go to voters for final approval in November.

“If you recall our first public hearing, we had a pretty bad snowstorm,” Cleveland said. Only 13 people attended that meeting Jan. 6.

“We wanted to offer one more chance for public comment because not many people made it out for that one,” Cleveland said.

Cleveland said he also planned to poll commissioners to find out how they want to replace Commissioner David E. Adams. Adams died last week after a head-on crash on Route 26 in Oxford.
