BRADENTON, Fla. — The University of Maine baseball team fell to Central Michigan 16-6 on Tuesday afternoon.

CMU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Jim Geldhof homered. The Chippewas (6-5) added five runs both in the top of the third and fourth innings to take a commanding 11-0 lead. CMU scored two more in the top of the seventh and three in the top of the ninth to finish with 16 runs.

Maine got on the scoreboard on Ryan Quintal’s two-run homer. The Black Bears (3-5) added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on a groundout by Mike Ferriggi and a base hit by Matt McGraw.

Maine added a run in both the eighth and ninth innings to finish the game.

Softball
St. Joseph’s splits

FORT MEYER, Fla. — Saint Joseph’s (3-1) split a doubleheader, first defeating Northland 21-3 and later falling to Anna Maria 9-1 in collegiate softball action.

In the first game, winning pitcher Allyson Ferguson led St. Joe’s with a double and scored four runs, while Deb Brown had a single, two walks and three runs scored.

In the nightcap, Anna Maria pitcher Amy Makynen held the Monks to a single run to notch the victory. The lone run for Saint Joe’s was scored by Ferguson on a single by Jamie Daugherty.

Skiing
Area skiers at NCAAs

STOWE, Vt. – A Bethel skier who competes for New Hampshire and four athletes from Bates College will compete in the 2005 NCAA Skiing Championships.

Stephanie Vaughan will represent UNH in the Alpine events. The Bobcats qualifiers include Sean McKenna in Alpine and the Nordic trio of Seth Hubbard, Daniel Johnson and Kaitlyn McElroy.

The competition at Stowe Mountain Resort starts today and continues through March 12.
