NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (AP) – A 44-year-old man who told police he had a hostage, a gun and explosives was found to have none of those items after a six-hour standoff with police that ended without incident early Sunday.
Police also said Glen LaBarre threatened to ignite the natural gas lines in the multi-family home on Stanley Street, but did not.
LaBarre, whom some neighbors described as calm and friendly, was taken to New Britain General Hospital for psychiatric treatment. It was not clear whether he had been charged with any crime Sunday night.
A police officer on duty said he was not sure whether charges had been filed.
The standoff began shortly before midnight Saturday when LaBarre called police from his apartment. He said he had a hostage, was heavily armed and had explosives.
Police evacuated the building, brought in hostage negotiators and called in for backup from police in Newington and Berlin.
Officers entered the apartment just before 5:30 a.m. Sunday and took LaBarre into custody.
