LEWISTON – The YWCA of Central Maine, along with hundreds of local organizations around the country, will celebrate Week of the Young Child from April 3 to 9.

“Research and experience clearly show that children’s earliest years are crucial learning years,” said Wendy Russell, child care director. “Week of the Young Child is a chance to celebrate the learning opportunities of young children and to recognize the responsibilities we share for helping them make the most of those opportunities.”

Week of the Young Child celebrations around the country will promote high quality child care, preschool and other early education opportunities for young children and honor the teachers and administrators who work to improve those programs.

The YWCA will celebrate by hosting an exhibit comprised of art projects that children in the child care program have designed. It will take place at the YWCA, 130 East Ave., during the week of April 4.

Also from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, April 4, the YWCA will begin taking registrations for summer camp programs. New is the counselor-in-training program, designed for students ages 13 to 16. Sign-ups for the program will also be held.
