HARTFORD – About 20 gallons of freshly made maple syrup and 300 gallons of sap were destroyed Friday morning by a fire at John Dyke’s sap house on the Farrand Hill Road. Most of the equipment was saved.
Canton Fire Chief Wayne Dube said nine volunteer firefighters responded to the 8 a.m. fire. He said the stovepipe extending from the sap house apparently got too hot as Dyke was boiling down sap. It ignited the roof.
By time the Fire Department arrived, Dube said Dyke had pretty much knocked down the flames with a garden hose.
Dube said Dyke decided to shut down his syrup-making operation for the year, but plans to resume next season.
He provided no estimate of damage.
The Fire Department was at the scene for about a half-hour.
