PARIS – Two teams from Oxford Hills have made the jump to the Destination Imagination state tournament in Orono on Saturday, April 9.

The Oxford Hills Middle School team includes Phoenix McLaughlin, Alex Kumaki, Sorrel Dunn, Kelsey Doney and Jason Aube. The team has been working on a solution to the “Sudden SerenDIpity” challenge, which has several elements the team had to complete: playwriting, theater arts, technical design, construction invention and design process.

The invention the team created had to be changed with a SerenDIpity event. The school took first place at the regional celebration in Auburn in March.

Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School also has a team advancing to the state level. The team took on the “Designing Bridges” challenge. Ben Reis, Kyle Ivey, Dan Millett, Karen Kumaki, Jeremy Santos and Hilary White worked together on bridge architecture and structural engineering. The bridge is made of wood, monofilament fishing line, and glue.

They earned points based on the weight held by the bridge multiplied by its span. The team also created a story about a connection between two cultures.

Destination Imagination is a nonprofit organization offering a creative problem-solving program to kids worldwide. The top teams from around the state will advance to the University of Maine in Orono on April 9.
