AUGUSTA – The State YMCA of Maine will host Maine’s Youth in Government program at the State House on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 8, 9 and 10. The weekend program offers Maine high school students a chance to experience firsthand how Maine’s Legislature operates.

Students write the legislation, lead the committees, write their own newspaper and serve in all leadership positions, including Youth Gov. Ben Crockett from Oxford Hills Comprehensive.

This year 189 students will attend the program from all over Maine. Area schools include Winthrop High School, Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School, Leavitt Area High School and St. Dominic Regional High School.

The program will open at 2 p.m. Friday in the House chambers and will run all evening. Participants will return for a full day on Saturday and finish on Sunday around noon. A highlight of the weekend is the election of next year’s governor.
