AUBURN – To help promote literacy and Literacy Volunteers-Androscoggin, local tournament Scrabble competitors will play demonstration games at the Auburn Public Library on Saturday.
Keith Hagel and Sharon Hawkes will be at the library from 9 to 11 a.m. and from 1 to 3 p.m.
They will be available to talk about the popular board game, which has had a recent resurgence of popularity due to the book “Word Freak,” the movie “Word Wars” and the telecast of championship Scrabble on ESPN.
Hagel is the second-highest-ranked tournament player in Maine. He has been playing tournament Scrabble for seven years, and has participated in contests in Kentucky, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and New Hampshire.
He won the tough second division of the Eastern Championships in Danbury, Conn., in 2002, as well as other tournaments in Connecticut and Massachusetts. Hagel is managing editor/nights at the Sun Journal, where a Scrabble board is always set up for staff and visitors.
Hawkes is the third-highest-ranked tournament player in Maine. She has been playing in the tournament circuit for five years, and is considered an intermediate player. She has won her division in Rochester, N.Y., and in Connecticut at the Eastern Championships. She is a certified Scrabble club director and hopes to open a club in Lewiston-Auburn this spring.
