The April 4 letters section caught my attention more than usual as the letters from Ms. Handlen and Mr. Moldaver both addressed the actions of GOP supporters as dangerous to our country.

Then followed the letter by Mr. Burton accusing the Maine Legislature and the governor of doing the same thing the GOP is doing on the national level.

With the “conservative” Congress, Supreme Court and White House in control, our nation operates by executive orders, allowing corporations to win anti-environment lawsuits by failing to fight for the laws in court, passing late-night bills by bending Congress’ rules until they are assured a win, declaring the “terrorist threat” is their paramount concern while proposing what amounts to amnesty for illegal immigrants.

The thing that really makes our nation comparable to the “communist”-style government is the current one-party rule and that the GOP is rigging long-standing rules to suit its purposes.

President Bush has yet to veto a single bill and regularly uses the “Congress out of session” rules to do exactly what they skewered President Clinton for doing. On his second and final term, Bush is still on the campaign trail or on vacation. If we continue on this course, we’ll be back to the days of the robber barons of old. Nothing would please the wealthy GOP backers more, the politics of the haves versus the rest of us that they accuse the “opposition” of using is really their own tactic.
