NORWAY – A handful of voters at a special town meeting Thursday formally accepted $750,000 in Community Development Block Grants to improve the old C.B. Cummings & Sons mill property.

The money is expected to go toward infrastructure at the former mill site, including a new stormwater drainage system, a parking lot on Water Street and utilities.

At a Norway Downtown Revitalization meeting earlier on Thursday, Norway Town Manager David Holt warned that the money will go quickly.

“I think it costs a lot of money to creatively redevelop an old mill, and while $750,000 is a lot of money, it may not be enough to creatively redevelop an old mill. Choices are going to have to be made,” he said.

The block grants were announced in February. The town has been awarded $500,000, and the Growth Council of Oxford Hills $250,000.

Holt said the town was involved with both grant applications and will ultimately be responsible for how the money is spent.
