RANGELEY – Dorothy M. Kidder, 87, of Rangeley, died Tuesday, April 12, at her home on Main Street in Rangeley.

She was born Oct. 5, 1917, in Rangeley, a daughter of Lester Magoon and Estella (Huntoon) Magoon Reed. She attended Rangeley schools, graduating from Rangeley High School in 1934. In 1937, she earned her teacher’s degree from Farmington State Teachers College, now known as the University of Maine at Farmington.

In 1940, she married John T. Kidder Jr., and they made their home in Rangeley. She taught in the Rangeley elementary school system for 28 years, 20 of which she also served as the principal.

She was a member of the Ki Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, Society International, which is an honorary society of teachers. She also was a member of the Franklin County Teachers Association and the Maine Retired Teachers. She was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Rangeley and was also very active in Republican politics.

In 1978, she was awarded the community service award, presented by the Rangeley Lakes Chamber of Commerce. She was also a recipient of an award for her services to the Rangeley P.T.A.

She was currently serving on the board of directors for Colonial Adjustment Inc., in Westbrook. She enjoyed cooking and spending time with her family at her son’s cottage on Rangeley Lake.

She is survived by a son, John T. Kidder III, and his wife, Barbara, of Saco; two grandsons, Steven J. Kidder and his wife, Summer, of Eden Prairie, Minn., and Scott Kidder and his wife, Erica, of Westbrook; and four great-grandchildren, Corey and Carly Kidder of Eden Prairie, Minn., and Jack and Sam Kidder of Westbrook.

She was predeceased by her husband, John Kidder Jr., in 1998.
