ORONO – The University of Maine exploded for six runs in the bottom of the third inning to complete sweep of the University of Maryland Baltimore County on Saturday.
The Black Bears used the long ball in the nightcap as Greg Creek, Ray Valles, Joel Barrett each connected with the long ball to account for the 10-6 win.
The opener saw Maine scrape out a 3-2 win with Steve Richard posting the mound win with seven innings of no-hit ball.
Tufts takes two
MEDFORD, Mass. – Tufts bounced back from a 7-1 deficit in the nightcap to pull out a 9-7 win and complete a sweep of Bowdoin.
The Jumbos chipped away and tied the score at 7-7 with four runs in the sixth. A sacrifice fly from Brian Casey gave Tufts the lead.
The Jumbos took a 10-3 victory in the opener behind Derek Rice, who allowed five hits and two runs. Bowdoin was paced by Jarred Lemieux and Pat Doucette, who had four hits each in the doubleheader.
Trinity sweeps Colby
HARTFORD, Conn. – Jon Rapport and Joe Wescott pitched complete games to lead Trinity College to a doubleheader sweep of Colby.
Rappaport pitched seven innings, allowing one earned run on six hits in a 5-1 victory. Joe Westcott threw a two-hit shutout for a 9-0 decision.
UMF sweeps UMPI
FARMINGTON – The University of Maine at Farmington handed the UMaine-Presque Isle a pair of losses Saturday at Hippach Field.
The Beavers took the opener 2-1 and followed up with a 5-3 win in the nightcap.
Peter McLaughlin went 5-7 with a pair of RBIs, and Eric Cummings hit a two-run homer to pace the Beavers attack.
Jarred Wales and Jacob Turner picked up the wins.
St. Joe’s sweeps Becker
LEICESTER, Mass. – Charlie Furbush (4-0) tossed a complete game win with six strikeouts to lead St. Joseph’s to a 10-2 win over Becker College.
The nightcap had the same results with a 3-1 win behind Gregg Kimball, who fanned six while allowing five hits.
The Monks (14-7) were led by Derek McIntosh with three hits, including a double, Luke Enman added a home run.
Southern Maine splits
MANSFIELD, Conn. – Junior right-hander Tip Fairchild scattered six singles and two walks, while striking out nine to give Southern Maine an 8-0 victory over Eastern Connecticut State University in the first game of a doubleheader.
The Warriors bounced back in the nightcap to shell the Huskies 20-5.
Ryan DiPietro matched Fairchild with zeros over the first five innings of Game 1 until the Huskies (13-6) put three runs on the board in the sixth. Fairchild led things off with a single and scored along with Joe McGhee and Max Arseanault.
In Game 2, the Warriors (19-7) exploded for four runs in the third, three coming in on a homer by Randy Re. Eastern chased pitcher Peter Bergeron from the game in the fourth with another four-run rally to take a commanding 9-0 lead.
Fairchild slugged his third home run of the season with a two-run blast in the eighth.
Softball
Bowdoin swept
BRUNSWICK – Tufts University took a pair of commanding wins from Bowdoin, 12-3 and 11-2, in doubleheader softball action Saturday.
Emily Nelson, who became the Polar Bears (16-7) all-time strikeouts leader during the game, took the loss. She fanned four in the game.
In Game 2, Bowdoin took a 2-0 first-inning lead as Danielle Chagnon drove home Jayme Woogerd with an RBI single, and Megan Rodgers plated Chagnon with a double.
Maine, Vermont split
BURLINGTON, Vt. – The pitcher Jenna Merchant scored both runs in the second game of a doubleheader to provide Maine a 2-0 win and prevent a sweep. Vermont took the opener 3-0 in America East softball action Saturday.
In Game 1, the Catamounts (14-11) scored twice in the third inning and added an insurance run in the sixth.
The Black Bears (10-18) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning of the nightcap when Merchant led off with a single up the middle, and later scored on a wild pitch.
Maine made it 2-0 when Merchant reached on an error, and scored on a two-out Marguerite Soule infield single with a bit of aggressive base running that caused Vermont to throw the ball away.
Colby, Trinity split
WATERVILLE – Wendy Bonner had two hits and two runs in the opener to lead Colby to a 5-2 victory over Trinity, before the Bantams bounced back with a 7-0 win in the nightcap.
Southern Maine splits
GORHAM – Senior Melissa Henderson tossed a one-hitter to lead the Southern Maine to a 2-0 win over the UMass-Dartmouth as the Huskies split their doubleheader with a 6-2 loss in the nightcap Saturday.
The Huskies (12-11-1) plated both of their runs in the fourth inning. Sophomore co-captain Christen Lachapelle drew a walk to lead off the inning, and scored on a double from junior catcher Kim Lipman. Lipman scored two batters later on a single from junior second baseman Katie Mainville.
In Game 2, the Corsairs (9-10) collected five runs in the fourth inning to take a 6-0 lead.
UMF sweeps
FARMINGTON – Megan Goodrow went 3-for-5 and had two RBIs as the University of Maine at Farmington swept Lyndon State, 7-0 and 6-1, in doubleheader softball action Saturday.
The Beavers (11-4) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the opener on an RBI double from Goodrow. Goodrow keyed three more runs in the third inning on another RBI double. Lauren Stacey was credited with the win in Game 1.
Designated hitter Cindy Ravinski tripled and doubled in the nightcap, plating a pair of runs, for the Beavers. Stephanie Moriarty recorded eight strikeouts over five innings to pick up the win.
