Welcome home, 133rd Engineer Battalion, from a job well done. Remember well those citations because they will soon be forgotten. How well I know.

It was the Berlin crisis in 1967; the 2nd Battalion, 20th Armor, a National Guard unit stationed in Lewiston, was called to active duty for training in the event of war. No, there was no war, but we remained on active duty for one year. We did not suffer the evil of war, but we were separated from our families for that year. That was no big deal. We did what we were paid for and were soon forgotten. At the end of the year of training, we came home. We did not receive a hero’s welcome (which we did not deserve, anyway). So what am I crying about?

The city of Lewiston also forgot us. They didn’t put yellow ribbons on the National Guard fir tree planted in the city park by the National Guard (the only fir tree in the city park).

So, 133rd Engineer Battalion, enjoy your laurels. That’s all you will receive and will be soon forgotten.
