HOLYOKE, Mass. – St. Joseph’s erupted for 34 hits Sunday to sweep Elms College 10-3 and 12-0 in baseball action.
The Monks (17-7) extended their win streak to seven games. Derek McIntosh, Brian Schools and Andy Exley had five hits apiece.
USM sweeps Thomas
GORHAM – Brandon Brewer belted a three-run homer and drove in five runs and Ryan Bourque had five hits to lead Southern Maine to a 14-2, 5-3 sweep of Thomas.
The Huskies (15-6) fell behind early in both games, but used a five-run first inning in the opener and a three-run second in the nightcap to take command. Tip Fairchild had four of USM’s 19 hits in the opener.
Amherst sweeps Bates
AMHERST, Mass. – Zach Schonberger and Josh Santry ripped home runs to power Amherst to a 7-3 and 10-3 doubleheader sweep over Bates.
Tyler Paul had a single and a double in the opener for the Bobcats (2-10). Adam Taranto, Eric Hood and Alex Eagleson had doubles in the nightcap.
UMBC 14, Maine 1
ORONO – Alex Laddbush drove in five runs to lead Maryland-Baltimore County’s 19-hit attack in a 14-1 rout of Maine.
The visitors scored 10 runs in the opening two innings and coasted to the victory. Eric Butkiewicz limited the Black Bears (19-10) to two hits – one a double by Greg Creek.
Softball
Lasell sweeps UMF
FARMINGTON – Maine-Farmington committed nine errors in dropping a 5-0 and 3-1 softball decisions to Lasell.
UMF pitchers Lauren Stacey and Meagan Carmen held Lasell to four hits in the opener, but seven errors led to all five runs. Lasell scored three more unearned runs in the nightcap despite a one-hitter by Stephanie Moriarty. Sarah Martin had two doubles for UMF (11-6).
Maine 3, Vermont 1
BURLINGTON, Vt. – Brittany Cheney tripled and scored on Molly McKinney’s two out single in the sixth inning to leift Maine to a 3-1 victory over Vermont.
Jess Brady doubled in an insurance run in the seventh for the Black Bears (11-18).
USM, RIC split
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Christie Lotti tripled and scored on a passed ball in the eighth inning of the nightcap as Rhode Island College avoided a sweep by Southern Maine. Both games ended 1-0.
Melissa Henderson scattered four hits and struck out 12 in the opener.
The lone run was scored on Katie Mainville’s RBI single in the first inning. Henderson also pitched the second game, allowing five hits and striking out nine.
St. Joe’s sweeps Newbury
STANDISH – St. Joseph’s extended its win streak to four games with an 8-0 and 11-4 triumphs over Newbury.
Pinch hitter Megan Farrell knocked in a pair of runs for the Monks (10-15) in the opener. Darcy Lee pounded out three hits in the nightcap, while Leanne Morton and Helene Liaci each had a triple and a single.
Kahler Dowling and Allyson Ferguson were the winning pitchers.
