AUBURN – Firefighters had to extricate two people from a crumpled car Sunday night, but the passengers refused medical treatment at the scene.

According to police, Renita Pepin of Lewiston was driving a 2000 Volkswagen Jetta and cresting a hill on Merrow Road on her way to Minot Avenue when she applied the brakes. The car spun twice, then hit a tree in the 400 block of the street.

Police, fire and ambulance crews responded to the 7 p.m. accident. Firefighters used special equipment to extricate Tanika Dickson of Lewiston and Keldrick Washington of Mississippi, both adults.

They were examined by emergency medical staff at the scene and refused treatment, according to Patrolman William Rousseau. Pepin was uninjured in the crash.

The collision destroyed the car.

Rousseau said wet roads might have contributed to the accident, but the specific cause was undetermined Sunday night.
