HOPKINTON, R.I. (AP) – A woman is dead after a house fire in Hopkinton.

Jenice Nichols, 40, was found dead in her bedroom after the fire at a home on Blue Pond Trail on Friday, fire officials said.

Nichols was believed to be asleep when the fire began in the next room, officials said. She was dead when firefighters found her under a pile of debris. The home was destroyed. Her 4-year-old daughter was at preschool at the time of the fire. Another daughter also was not home.

Nichols worked at the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut.

Hope Valley-Wyoming Fire District Chief Fred Stanley said the fire was accidental and is still under investigation. It was the town’s first fatality in a structure fire in 40 years, he said.
