LEWISTON – Janet Swift Hutchins Bowers, 88, of Rumford, died Friday, April 29, at the Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

She was born in Greenwood, March 4, 1917, the daughter of the late Harry M. and Florence (Littlefield) Swift and graduated from Woodstock High School in 1934.

On Sept. 21, 1946, she married Henry Bowers Sr., in Royalston, Mass., and moved here in 1948. They both worked at Ecko Wood Products for many years and lived in Greenwood until his death in 1979.

She was treasurer and served as school board member for the town of Greenwood. She later moved to Rumford and became active as a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary 1248. She was president of F.O.E. Auxiliary 1248 from 1992 to 1995 and from 1996 to 1998.

She was a colorful lady, an avid reader and a lover of animals, especially cats. She enjoyed crochet work. She made many afghans to give to nursing home residents. She was known for her sharp wit and was very knowledgeable about world events. She loved to travel. She led an active lifestyle and had a zest for life.

Survivors include her companion, Walter “Woody” Woodford, of Rumford; a daughter, Amanda Bowers of Rumford; a son, Richard Hutchins of Rumford; a son, Henry Bowers Jr., and his wife, Eva, of Greenwood; one sister, Carolyn Vaughan of Dixfield; one aunt, Esther Farnum of Norway; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
