POLAND – Adelaide N. Cairns, 83, passed away peacefully in her daughter’s care, in Poland, May 2, after a long illness with cancer.

She was born in Norway, July 30, 1921, the daughter of Leon G. and Mary Gammon Newcomb. She graduated from Norway High School in 1939 and Farmington State Teachers College in 1943, receiving a bachelor of science degree in home economics.

She was a teacher of home economics in Southwest Harbor and Rumford. She had been a home demonstration agent for Hancock County from 1941 to 1948. She taught at Oxford Hills High School, until her retirement in 1981. She was a member of the Second Congregational Church of Norway, Oxford County Retired Teachers, N.E.A., M.T.A., the Barton Reading Club and Stephens Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She was a former trustee of the Paris Public Library and corporator of Western Maine Health Care Corporation.

As a great-grandmother, she was affectionately known as “G.G.” She will be remembered for her delicious whirligig cookies and apple pies. She is remembered as the teacher who welcomed boys into her home economics classes. Friends and family remember her for her loyalty and support. People could always count on her.

Survivors include a daughter, Deborah C. Lamb of Poland; a son, Stephen G. Cairns and his wife, Nancy Watson, of Norway; four grandchildren, Kristen Cairns, Carol Twitchell and her husband, Jeffrey, Johanna Cairns and Aurora Lenz-Watson; five great-grandchildren, Adrianna, Karleigh and Greydin Twitchell, Trevon Wright, and Montana Pipkrus; a sister-in-law, Irene Newcomb; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, George W. Newcomb; and a sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth N. Stack and her husband, William.
