MANSFIELD, Conn. – Freshman second baseman Peter Olson hit a two-run double and later scored during a five-run, sixth-inning rally that lifted the fifth-seeded Rhode Island College Anchormen to a 7-4 upset win over the third-seeded University of Southern Maine Huskies in the second day of play at the Little East Conference Baseball Tournament.
Olson doubled into the left-center field gap to score senior third baseman Chris Smaldone and Jamie Aldoupolis both who had walked. Olson moved to third on an infield error and scored on a double by senior outfielder Chris Higgins. Sophomore Tim Henault, who reached on the error, scored on an RBI single by freshman first baseman Jim Connell. Higgins would score the final run on a wild pitch.
Southern Maine threatened in the seventh and eighth innings, but was unable to push across any runs. Senior DH/P Matt Brannon came on for the Anchormen to get the final out in the eighth, then retired the side in order in the ninth for his second save of the season.
Husson 8, Becker 2
STANDISH – No. 2-seed Husson College defeated No. 3-seed Becker College 8-2 and advanced to today’s championship game against No. 1-seed Saint Joseph’s College in baseball action on Thursday.
St. Joe’s defeated No. 3 Becker College 6-0 in Game 4 of the NAC Tournament at Mahaney Diamond also on Thursday.
Sophomore Robert Webber earned his fifth win of the season, striking out three and allowing just two runs on eight hits.
Husson (25-16, 11-4 NAC) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning on five hits.
