Maine wins AE title

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Joe Hough’s infield single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 11th inning lifted the University of Maine to a dramatic 6-5 victory over the University of Vermont in the championship game of the 2005 America East baseball championship Saturday evening.

With the game knotted at 5-5, Maine’s Curt Smith led off the bottom of the 11th by reaching on an error. Right fielder Matt McGraw followed with a single to left field, before Mike Ferriggi reached on a fielder’s choice, retiring Smith.

After Ray Vallee’s infield single loaded the bases with one out, Hough hit a chopper in front of the plate that only went about eight feet before it died in the infield grass. With the Catamounts’ catcher and pitcher going for the ball, the plate was left unoccupied, allowing pinch runner Mark Ostrander to race home with the game-winning run.

Vermont beat Maine 6-5 earlier in the day Saturday in the double-elimination tournament to force the deciding game.
