On May 19, the Sun Journal published an article addressing Sen. Snowe-Mello’s attempt to introduce legislation that would further the role of abstinence in sex education.
Many organizations quickly claimed that allowing abstinence education isn’t necessary, since the rates of teens practicing abstinence is higher than it used to be. If more teens are practicing abstinence, isn’t that an indication that abstinence should be further encouraged and promoted in sex education? It only seems logical to me to promote a known way of avoiding pregnancy and STDs, especially if so many are already practicing it.
Planned Parenthood and other such organizations that promote so-called “family planning” are contradicting themselves. First, if Planned Parenthood really wanted to help people plan for their futures, one would think that abstinence, the one and only sure way to prevent STDs and pregnancy, would be something they would advocate. Instead, they promote the use of contraceptives.
Let’s take a good hard look at the sincerity behind the opposition to Sen. Snowe-Mello’s proposal. The senator wants to give complete education on how to be safe and healthy, and Planned Parenthood simply wants to further their own business. Support the senator’s efforts to fully educate young people.
