OXFORD – A 16-by-20-foot building used as a livestock office at the Oxford County Fairgrounds burned to the ground early Tuesday morning.

No one was injured in the fire, and the cause is under investigation, according to Scott Hunter of the Oxford Fire Department. Hunter said he suspected the cause of the fire was electrical.

A call came in around 3:30 a.m from a woman staying in a trailer on the fairgrounds. Except for a couple of posts still sticking out of the ground, Hunter said, “the building was gone before we even got there” 10 minutes later. A total of three engines were at the scene, one from Norway, Hunter said.

Hunter estimated that it would cost around $10,000 to replace the building, which was owned by the Oxford County Fair Association. He said the value of the contents of the building, including a gas stove, refrigerator, desk, fair records and boxes of ribbons, was possibly around $2,000.

Hunter said a handful of firefighters remained at the scene extinguishing smoldering embers until around 4:45 a.m.
