MOBILE, Ala. – Kenneth Hobbs Libby, 80, of Mobile, Ala., died June 10, following a long illness.

He was born the oldest of four children to James Kenneth and Carolyn Hobbs Libby on Jan. 8, 1925, in North Turner. After graduating from high school in 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Army.

In 1944, he married Dorothy Mae Fletcher, with whom he had five children and who died in 1974. His second wife, Ruth Patricia Smedley, died in 2002.

He spent most of his working life as an employee of International Paper Co. A devout Christian, after his retirement he became a lay minister, devoting many hours to a nursing home ministry, a prison ministry and mission work. He worked for several years after his retirement as a security guard at the Mobile Infirmary Daycare Center, a position which brought him much joy.

He was also an accomplished musician, who excelled at playing many instruments. He will be missed by his family, his friends and the many people he helped.

He is survived by four children, Constance Libby of North Turner, Rhonda Chase of Rumford, Kevin Libby and his wife, Tina, of Poland, and Bryce Libby of Manchester, Conn.; one stepdaughter, Karen Luloff of Mobile, Ala.; one brother, Jack Libby and his wife, Judy, of Wilton; 10 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

His oldest child, Linda Thompson of Saraland, Ala., died in 1995; a stepdaughter, Kandace Cain, died in 1999.
