AUGUSTA – The state American Legion will hold the annual state convention from Friday through Sunday, June 17 to 19, at the Augusta Civic Center.

Led by State Commander William Bickford of Norway, nearly 2,000 Legionnaires, Auxiliaries and Sons of the American Legion will attend.

The opening session will start at noon on Friday, with a grand opening ceremony honoring those who have given their lives in the war on terrorism.

Friday and Saturday will feature awards to individuals for achievement in their particular field, such as Firefighter of the Year Barry Deering of Dexter, Law Officer of the Year Darrell Ouellette of New Sweden, Educators of the Year Linda Voss of Winslow, Ron Dobra of Greenville and announcement of Legionnaire of the Year.

The four congressional delegates have confirmed attendance as well as Gov. John Baldacci and other state leaders.

The program on Saturday will conclude with election of new state officers and a formal installation ceremony.
