AUBURN – Ledge blasting at the new Park Avenue elementary school will move into the street on Wednesday and Thursday.

Crews from McGee Construction will close Park Avenue between Court and Lake streets daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. Crews are working to connect a water main on the west side of Park Avenue to the new school.

Work on the site around the new school began in April, with crews dynamiting granite ledge on the lot regularly.

“But this is different because we’re actually blasting in the street,” said project manager Jeff Malinowski. “The water main is on one side and there’s all this ledge between here and there. So, we’ll have to go right into the pavement.”

The road will reopen nightly, he said.

The blasts should be small and carefully contained, Malinowski said.

“We’re being very careful because we are working very close to the main and we cannot damage it,” he said. “So, this will be very minor – nothing spectacular by any means.”

Workers will blow three whistles five minutes before each blast, two whistles one minute before and one whistle when everything is all clear.
