LEOMINSTER, Mass. (AP) – A mother faces charges after leaving her infant and toddler alone in a car while she went into a store to buy diapers, police said.

Passersby called police when they noticed the pair in the car Saturday afternoon in the parking lot of a Toys-R-Us store in Leominster. One of the car’s windows was rolled down an inch.

Yuling Dipietro, 36, of Harvard, will be summoned to court on a charge of reckless endangerment of children, police told the Telegram & Gazette of Worcester.

The 2-month-old boy and the girl, who is nearly 2 years old, were examined at UMass Memorial’s Leominster Campus. They are in good health, said Mia Alvarado, a spokeswoman for the Department of Social Services, which is investigating.

Dipietro told police she went to the store to buy diapers, the newspaper reported. Witnesses said the children were alone in the car for 10 or 15 minutes.

The toddler was unconscious when police arrived. Rescue tried to wake her up, but couldn’t. She later regained consciousness. Police said it was 82 degrees when they arrived at 3:30 p.m.

DSS investigators met with the father of the children, who took custody of them.
