I read that 60 percent of Americans now oppose President Bush’s policy in Iraq. All this as Bush still struggles feebly to convince the American public that the invasion of Iraq had something to do with Sept. 11. The world never bought that deception, and Americans are increasingly rejecting it.

Let’s go back, before the invasion.

You have 1,700 American lives, a lot of worldwide political capital (and even more domestically), many megatons of bombs if you need them, and $300 billion to spend, all to make our country more secure. What do you do? Invade Iraq? Or …?

To help put that in perspective, the entire U.S. budget for foreign aid each year is about $20 million.

If the president is so confident in the righteousness of his war, why does he run up record deficits, pretending that the war is costing us nothing while ensuring that our children and grandchildren will have to pay for it?

Do we pass this off and say his intentions were good and he just miscalculated? Or do we finally acknowledge we have witnessed one of the most destructive courses of conduct ever undertaken by an American president? One whose arrogance continues to astonish …
