ST. LOUIS (AP) – St. Louis third baseman Scott Rolen was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday to rest his surgically repaired left shoulder.

Rolen was injured May 10 in a baserunning collision with Dodgers first baseman Hee-Seop Choi and missed 33 games following surgery.

He returned from the DL in mid-June, but has been struggling with the shoulder ever since. He was batting .207 with no homers and eight RBIs in 87 at-bats since his return.

“Hopefully by resting it we’ll get him back,” manager Tony La Russa said. “I said yesterday I was worried the alternative was spring training, but I think the expectations that are if he rests it now and works on when he can we’ll get him back.”

The Cardinals recalled Scott Seabol from Triple-A Memphis.

La Russa said he’d use a combination of four players at the position while his All-Star third baseman was out, Abraham Nunez, John Mabry, Hector Luna and Seabol.
