WILTON – The Wilton Free Public Library has received four new computers through a JTG Foundation grant to expand public access to computer resources in rural Maine. The foundation has awarded 83 computers to 30 public libraries in Franklin, Hancock, Oxford and Penobscot counties.
The four computers awarded to the Wilton library replace the existing four public access computers, which have been failing over the last few months. For people who have been frustrated due to the failed computers, the four new ones are a welcome sight, said library staff.
The computers are used by tourists, professionals and students. The library encourages the use of the Marvel! Databases offered through the Maine State Library and the university system.
Library staff assist patrons in Web searches and references. Many use the computers for pleasure, e-mail and Web browsing as well as word processing, PowerPoint and tax preparation. Local organizations such as Healthy Coalition have provided the library with their health services database information for public use.
The library is also able to offer “walk-in wireless” connection to anyone who has a laptop computer. The library is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, noon to 7 p.m. Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.
Libraries in selected counties were invited to apply for up to 10 computers to upgrade or expand existing resources devoted to public access. Grant applications confirmed that a need exists for adequate and up-to-date technology devoted to public use in rural libraries in Maine.
The JTG Foundation is a private foundation that annually makes grants supporting charitable causes in Maine, with a primary focus on enhancing community services, cancer care services, mental health services, as well as services supporting the elderly and low income or disadvantaged children.
