COVENTRY, R.I. (AP) – A dog that mauled and killed a newborn girl July 13 was euthanized Monday.

A veterinarian put down the Siberian husky at the Coventry Animal Shelter, where the dog had been quarantined.

Shadow, a roughly 70-pound Siberian husky, pulled 6-day-old Alexis McDermott from a portable crib. Alexis’ mother had briefly left the room.

Scott and Cindy McDermott could have requested a vicious-dog hearing but turned over ownership of the animal last week.

Several people contacted the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to express interest in adopting the dog, television station WLNE reported Monday night. But a new state law required that officials euthanize Shadow.

Scott McDermott told police the dog had not displayed aggressive behavior to the infant before the attack.
