AUBURN – Elaine M. Goldman Cohen, died at home after a long illness. She was educated in local schools and was a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, R.I. She had been a fashion designer in New York.
She was an artist who worked in many mediums, including oil and watercolor paints, charcoal and pastel sketches. More recently, she had executed a series of fine prints, etched from copper, stone, and wood plates which she had etched herself.
She was an expert in old glass, especially Peach Blow, Mt. Washington, Mary Gregory and satin glass.
In the summer, Elaine’s garden reflected a palette of colors and textures, with her favorite Casaclance’ lilies in the place of honor. She had created a “fairy garden” in a nook with moss and ferns. Her eye for beauty was well-known by her family and friends. She attracted many types of birds to her yard, including eight pairs of cardinals.
She enjoyed travel and reading, including books on art history and novels.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. Stuart R. Cohen; her daughters, Jennifer Cohen and Rebecca Schafer; a son, Steven Cohen and his wife, Ilene; grandchildren, Meredith and Marc Schaffer; a sister, Frima Goldman Shapiro; and many nieces and nephews.
Her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Morris E. Goldman; a brother, Dr. Richard N. Goldman; and a daughter, Richelle Cohen Lavoy, predeceased her.
She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend.
