District meeting

FARMINGTON – Franklin County Soil and Water Conservation District will hold its monthly board meeting from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Aug. 1, at the USDA Service Center conference room, 107 Park St.

Summer services

PHILLIPS – Summer services at the Phillips Shared Ministry will be held at 10 a.m. at the Congregational Church and will be led by the following pastors: July 31, Susan Kaplan of Wilton; Aug. 7, the Rev. Margaret Proctor of Wilton; Aug. 14, Ben Wetherill of Rangeley; Aug. 21, the Rev. Raymond Bradley, a former Phillips pastor; Aug. 28, the Rev. Richard Waddell of Farmington; Sept. 4, the Rev. Doug Walrath and Sherry Walrath of Strong, who will sign for the hearing impaired; Sept. 11, the Rev. David Gaewski of Mt. Vernon.

There will be a sing-along and ice cream social at the church at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18. Songs will include golden oldies and hymns, and all are invited.

The Shared Ministry Women report a successful jumble sale on July 16. The next meeting of the women will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 3, at Shadagee.

Final sessions

WILTON – The Summer Reading Program, “Around the World in 43 Days,” at the Wilton Free Public Library final sessions include a lunch and listen at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 2, when State Rep. Tom Saviello will read a picture book about the United States of America.

A closing program will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 3, that includes an international fair and potluck with Adam Miller, folksinger, presenting “Singing Through History.”

Bean supper

STRONG – The 36th annual bean-hole bean supper will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, at Strong Beach on Porter Lake. In case of rain, the meal will be held at the Forster Building.

There will be bean-hole baked beans, franks, salads, desserts, rolls and beverages for a cost of $5 for adults and $2.50 for children 5 to 11 and under 5, free.

The dinner is sponsored by the Porter Lake Association to support activities beneficial to the lake.

Strong Beach can be reached from Route 234 or from the Taylor Hill Road off Route 27 in New Vineyard.

Driving course

AVON – SAD 58 Adult and Community Education, in partnership with the Opportunity Center of North Franklin County, will offer a tractor-trailer driving course starting on Sept. 6 and running through November. The course will be taught at the Opportunity Center in Avon by certified CDL Class A instructor Lauri Sibulkin. Class size will be limited and preregistration is required by Aug. 15.

CPR course

FARMINGTON – Registration is being accepted for a community cardiopulmonary resuscitation course to be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, at Franklin Memorial Hospital.

The course, which is the Healthcare Provider Module, will follow the standards and guidelines for CPR from the American Heart Association and is designed for the general public. It will include information on basic cardiac life support techniques for adults, children and infants, as well as instruction on auto electronic defibrillators.

The CPR course must be attended in its entirety in order to receive certification. The fee is $40 and includes a textbook. Class size is limited and preregistration, as well as a pretest, is required before attending.
