BEDFORD, N.H. (AP) – U.S. Sen. John Sununu is sporting a buzz cut, but not because he couldn’t handle the heat in Washington.
Sununu, R-N.H., recently shaved his head to show solidarity with Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, who lost his hair while undergoing chemotherapy for lymphoma.
Sununu said he noticed that members of Specter’s Senate Judiciary Committee staff shaved their heads to support their boss and he decided to follow suit.
“I thought it was a great thing for them to do and may be something I should consider,” he said.
“My children were mortified at the idea and put together a pamphlet laying out arguments against it, including, You will look really bad and frighten people,”‘ he said.
Sununu said Specter was surprised to see his new hairstyle but appreciated the show of support.
“It’s nice for the summer,” he said.
