SCARBOROUGH – The Maine Elks Association held its annual “Owie Box” motorcycle ride for children in the Maine Children’s Cancer Program on July 23.
The event attracted 67 motorcycle enthusiasts, who raised a total of $14,111 for the “Owie Box” program. The program provides toys for children who have undergone a painful procedure to treat their cancer.
The ride began at the Rockland Elks Lodge and followed a route that took the riders through central and southern Maine, before arriving at the program’s Scarborough facility.
Riders stopped at the Augusta, Brunswick and Biddeford-Saco Elks Lodges, where additional riders joined the procession. Riding along with the group in support of the fund-raiser were two Rockland police officers and two from the Scarborough Police Department.
The riders turned in their pledges and were given a barbecue lunch and tours of the facility. The event concluded with a check presentation by Event Coordinator Skip Gay, Augusta Elks, and Maine Elks State President Elmer Berry, Lewiston Elks, to program board members Roger Sicard and Andrew Brenner.
The event began two years ago, with a group of 13 riders who raised a $600 for the program. Another ride is being planned for next year.
