MONMOUTH – Voters at Monday’s special election were willing to loosen the purse strings for the sake of better education.
They also agreed to fund a property revaluation. But when it came to town planning, they drew the line.
By a 250 to 268 vote, townspeople rejected an article that would have put up $10,826 for planning purposes. More than half of it – $5,581- would have funded Monmouth’s dues as a member of the Kennebec Valley Council of Governments. The rest would have paid for mapping and Planning Board expenses.
Townspeople OK’d reassessing property here for tax purposes in a vote of 309 to 210.
That article appropriates $61,200 from surplus to help pay for the townwide revaluation. The same article authorizes selectmen to borrow up to $100,000 for the project, with that money to be added to $25,000 raised for the same purpose in June.
The “additional local funds article” for school spending authorizes raising $680,191 for town education needs, down from $717,723 raised last year for the same purpose.
It was approved 269 to 253.
Article 3, also dealing with education spending, was approved 275 to 247.
Jason Simcock, Monmouth’s town manager, provided the vote results.
