JAY – Approximately 60 percent of Jay’s school bus garage was damaged in the June 28 fire and needs to be replaced, Superintendent Robert Wall said Wednesday.

The garage on School Bus Road is valued at $415,000; the replacement cost to rebuild and repair the damaged portion is $253,884, he said.

The value of the building’ contents damaged in the fire is $11,590, he said. After the fire started on a commercial tractor parked in the garage, it spread to the bus garage and the school buses parked in it. Firefighters were able to save six of nine buses in the garage. The tractor and three buses were destroyed.

Wall said he’ll give School Committee members an update on the damage to the building during their meeting beginning at 6 p.m. today in the Middle School library.

All the information has been sent to the insurance company, Wall said. He hadn’t heard what the insurance will cover, but he anticipates all the damage will be covered for the building and contents.

On July 21, the school board voted to replace two of the buses and the tractor, using insurance money and $40,851 from a long-term reserve account.

Wall anticipates that the bus fleet will be available to start school at the end of August. The two new buses have been ordered and the buses rescued from the fire are being cleaned and repaired, he said.
