The Rev. Douglas Taylor’s bizarre letter (“Darkness,” July 28) mentions, among other things, his own burning of the Harry Potter novels and the biblical precedent for doing so. However, Exodus 21:7-11 says it’s perfectly acceptable to sell your daughter into slavery, so I’m not sure the Bible is the best source to consult.
It might be a better idea to ask which groups of people in recent history burned a lot of books? I know the Germans in the 1930s did. Mr. Taylor may want to decide if that’s really a group he wants to imitate.
And his ignorant attacks on witches (Wicca) don’t hold up. The Wiccan religion is just that – a religion that’s thousands of years old. As someone who’s dating a Wiccan, I can assure him that they’re very nice people. I wonder if Mr. Taylor has ever met a practicing witch and had a conversation with one?
It’s perfectly acceptable to be a pagan. Freedom of religion was expressly established by the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
It seems the Rev. Taylor is threatened by the fact that there are people out there who think differently about God than he does.
The Harry Potter books have helped pull millions of kids away from television and into the world of books. That’s a good thing.
Taylor is right about one thing, however. There is a “darkness that looms over our nation” – fundamentalists who are trying to impose their views on others.
