An article in the Sun Journal on Aug. 16, “Slur prompts Bowdoin to remove Web guides,” correctly points out that material removed on Aug. 15 from the Bowdoin College Web site demeans French Canadians.

In my view, the comment described in the Sun Journal’s article is highly offensive and demeaning to all right-minded people. The remark was written by a recent graduate in response to a request from our Office of Alumni Relations for opinions about living conditions in several U.S. cities. Those opinions were published online in a series of “City Guides” offered through our Career Planning Center to other alumni who might be in the process of relocating to another city.

Unfortunately, the college made an error in its failure to review the submissions that were posted.

This incident violates Bowdoin College policy and offends our values as an educational institution that demands civility and respect for others.

On behalf of the college, I apologize to Sun Journal readers for this insensitive and unacceptable remark.

Bowdoin College, Brunswick
