GREENE – Town Manager Charlie Noonan is heading an investigation into who buried a television, refrigerator, air conditioner and black cable at the transfer station.

“We are not really sure on the timeline when this was buried, but some believe it to be around six years ago,” Noonan told selectmen at their meeting Monday night.

Items were seen protruding through the ground at the station recently, prompting the town to bring an excavator to dig last week. What workers found from scratching around, Noonan said, were a television, a refrigerator, an air conditioner and several feet of black cable. Burying such refuse is illegal.

Fearing that hazardous chemicals such as mercury may have seeped into the soil, Noonan said he would notify the Maine Department of Environmental Protection about the situation, including a plan on how to handle it and having engineers test the soil. The site on a dirt road off Allen Pond Road

“I need to get some proposals done right away,” he said. “Something has to be done before the snow falls.”
