LEWISTON – The race for the mayor is the only contest so far in this November’s election.
Would-be candidates for elected city positions have until Sept. 9 to take out and return nomination forms. So far, eight people have returned their nominations and confirmed a spot on the ballot.
Incumbent Mayor Lionel Guay will seek another two-year term, and he’ll face perennial mayoral candidate Charles Soule. This will be the fifth time Soule has sought the mayor’s chair.
Four incumbent City Council candidates have turned in their nomination forms as well. They include Ward 2 Councilor Renee Bernier, Ward 3 Councilor Lillian Lafontaine O’Brien, Ward 4 Councilor Ronald Jean and Ward 7 Councilor Normand Rousseau.
City Clerk Kathy Montejo said sitting councilors in Wards 1 and 6 are still circulating petitions.
No challengers have appeared on City Council ballot so far. Four people are circulating petitions for Ward 5, including sitting Councilor Robert Connors, and one challenger is looking to challenge Rousseau for Ward 7 seat.
Only two candidates have confirmed a spot on the ballot for School Committee. Ward 1 representative John Butler will seek a second term, as will Ward 2 representative Laurier Lachance.
The Ward 6 School Committee spot remains open, Montejo said. Nobody has taken out nomination petitions for that job.
Candidates have little more than two weeks left to take out nomination papers. The Ward 6 School Committee spot is currently the only one in the city not to have a potential candidate.
Candidates for city office have until 4:30 p.m. Sept. 9 to hand in their nominating petitions. At-large School Committee candidates must submit petitions with at least 50 signatures, but not more than 100, of registered city voters. Candidates for other School Committee seats and for City Council must submit papers with between 50 and 100 signatures of registered voters in their ward. Candidates for mayor need to gather signatures of 100 to 200 registered voters from anywhere in the city.
