CINCINNATI (AP) – St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Scott Rolen underwent arthroscopic surgery Monday to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder.

Cincinnati Reds medical supervisor Dr. Tim Kremchek performed the operation. Cardinals team physician Dr. Rick Wright was also present.

The surgery was Rolen’s second since he hurt the shoulder in a collision May 10 with Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Hee-Seop Choi. The earlier operation was May 13, and when Rolen’s shoulder continued to bother him, he decided last week to have the second procedure.

Rolen has been on the disabled list since July 22, played in only 56 games this season and hit .235. He’s expected to return by or during spring training.
