LEWISTON – An 18-year-old was hospitalized Wednesday night after he was struck by a car while crossing Main Street.
Police described the Lewiston teenager’s injuries as serious as they began an investigation into the 10 p.m. crash at Main and Arch streets, across from Rainbow Realty.
A portion of Main Street was closed to traffic as rescue crews responded and police awaited reconstruction experts to assist with the investigation.
Police said the teen was struck by a car driven by a woman who was heading toward Auburn. The 42-year-old woman called police from the scene of the crash and reported that the teenager appeared to have suffered a serious head injury.
Police did not identify the teen or the woman. Lt. Tom Avery said officers were trying to find family members of the teen who was struck to notify them about the crash.
At the scene of the accident, one of the boy’s sneakers sat in the roadway, close to the curb. The windshield of the woman’s car was smashed when the teen was thrown over the hood.
The woman driving the car spoke with police before she was taken to St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center. Police said the woman was not hurt in the accident but was hyperventilating from emotional distress.
A Maine State Police trooper was called to Lewiston to help reconstruct the crash. A section of Main Street was expected to remain blocked into Thursday morning.
“Due to the nature of the injuries involved, we’re treating this as a serious accident,” Avery said. “We’re trying to round up possible witnesses who may have seen what happened.”
